Delta 8 vs delta 9: How is delta 8 THC made?

Delta 8 vs delta 9: How is delta 8 THC made?

Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabainol (THC) may be the most recognized cannabinoid in marijuana, but according to the National Hemp Association,  there are up to 100 different cannabinoids in cannabis. One such cannabinoid that has newly emerged in the market is delta8 THC. From tinctures to gummies to vapes, this delta 8 THC has been making its way into the beauty and wellness industries. However, how often have you come across an article or news declaring that Delta-8 THC is a synthetic cannabinoid? We believe Delta 8 is not synthetic because it’s a classical cannabinoid found in nature. Today, to debunk such myths, USA hemp has decided to give you a comprehensive lowdown on how is delta 8 THC made?

What is delta 8: the difference between delta 8 and delta 9:

Although Delta8 THC and Delta 9 are both cannabidiols, they still have a set of differences. The significant difference lies in the chemical structure where a particular double bond is located on the chain of carbon atoms, defining how cannabidiols interact with CB1 receptors. Delta 8 has a double bond on the eighth carbon atom in its molecular structure, while Delta 9 has a double bond on the ninth carbon atom. While some people might suggest no notable differences between these two, this slight chemical distinction can lead to cognitive distortions and physical outcomes when comparing delta 8 and delta 9 THC. Users should be careful before picking between delta 8 or delta 9 because they are two decidedly different products.

Delta 9 THC is the compound that you should go for when you want to get a euphoric high and is what most consumers refer to when they say “THC.” Delta 9 binds with CB-1 receptors in the brain and can produce intense mind-altering effects like joy, relaxation, euphoria. Now, you must be wondering,
does Delta 8 THC make you high? Delta8 THC has mild psychoactive effects, less impactful than Delta 9 THC. If you are looking for the therapeutic effects of THC rather than getting a euphoric high, then delta 8 is your go-to cannabinoid.

Is delta 8 THC legal?

The constant comparison of Delta8 THC with marijuana has made it famous. It is because the compound in Delta-9 and marijuana that gets you stoned is THC. But this isn’t correct about Delta-8 because it comprises only trace amounts of THC.
It occurs naturally in hemp. So, according to the 2018 Farm Bill, which was introduced into law, hemp is legally grown in the United States unless it contains not more than 0.3% of Delta-9 THC.

cannabinoid conversions:

Delta8 THC occurs naturally in the cannabis plant, but with one problem. The average delta 8 THC concentration is so low that it’s hard to detect it. It means the average concentration of delta 9 in a marijuana plant is 15%, and for every 15 molecules of delta 9, there’s one molecule of delta 8 THC (or less).

However, all cannabinoids begin their life as cannabigerol acid (CBGA). AKA the mother of all cannabinoids, this compound grows throughout the plant’s development.

cycle into every natural cannabinoid known to humans, from THC to CBD and beyond. Due to it being the natural origin of cannabinoids, you can convert it to other cannabinoids without so much hassle. To keep up with the growing demand for delta 8 THC, companies are now using these conversion techniques to produce large quantities of this beneficial cannabinoid.

But this is not the only reason, thanks to the incredibly profitable CBD products. With a surplus o CBD now overwhelming the markets, producers are trying hard to extract excess CBD and Delta-9 as well. Both CBD and Delta-9 are excellent candidates for conversion into Delta-8 because it possesses similar benefits as CBD and falls into a legal category, unlike its sister delta 9.

How is Delta 8 THC made through CBD conversion: step by step:

Converting CBD or Delta 9 THC into Delta 8 THC is surprisingly easy because all cannabinoids are molecularly similar. However, some compounds used in the process might be harmful, so only a skilful person taking precautionary measures should perform the conversions. Although converting all cannabinoids into Delta 8 THC is possible, we will use CBD conversion for this example because it is the most common method, and CBD is a federally legal cannabinoid, where Delta 9 THC is not.

  • Step 1 Extract the hemp oil.

Process the unrefined hemp using advanced extraction methods to produce an oil rich in CBD, other cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids.

  • Step 2 Formulate a CBD isolate

In this step, take the raw hemp oil and distil it until there is nothing left but CBD isolate.

  • Step 3-

Dissolve the CBD isolate in the solvent. It requires an alkanes solvent like heptane or any other non-polar organic solvent.

  • Step 4 Add acid and mix it.

Hydrochloric and p-Toluenesulfonic acids are the most common types to use. Stirring the mixture continuously for up to 18 hours at a temperature of 100 degrees Celsius is advised.

  • Step 5Wash and dry the solution.

The upper phase should be separated once the chemical reaction is finished. Then rinse and neutralize the solution with something like sodium bicarbonate.

How is Delta 8 THC made? The Other Methods:

Another way is getting delta 8 THC extract straight from the cannabis plant. However, this method is highly critical and expensive.
This method involves pressurized carbon dioxide to obtain delta 8 from the hemp plant. Then, using nanotechnology, the tiny traces of delta 8 are isolated.
The third approach is to produce Delta 8 distillate right from the cannabis flower. In this process, steam is passed through the hemp buds under high pressure and low temperatures with varying degrees; this way, you can yield pure delta 8 extracts.
